What is BS3621?

BS3621 specifies performance requirements and test methods for thief-resistant, mechanically operated, single-point lock assemblies that are operated by a key from both the inside and outside of the door. Locks meeting the standard are tested against specified security and resistance-to-attack requirements.

BS3621 applies to the tested lock assembly rather than simply to the number of levers in the lock. A five-lever mortice lock, for example, does not automatically meet BS3621.

Locks certified to BS3621 are commonly fitted to suitable external timber doors. Certified assemblies can include certain five-lever mortice deadlocks, mortice sashlocks and high-security night latches. They may be recommended as part of a home security upgrade or specified by some home insurance policies, although customers should confirm their insurer’s precise requirements.

How Can You Identify a BS3621 Lock?

To identify a BS3621 lock, check for the British Standard number BS3621 and any applicable certification markings.

On a mortice lock certified through the BSI Kitemark scheme, the BSI Kitemark and BS3621 identification are commonly stamped or engraved on the lock faceplate along the edge of the door. The exact markings may vary depending on the product.

The appearance of a lock or the fact that it has five levers does not, on its own, confirm BS3621 certification. If the markings are unclear, B&B Locksmiths can inspect the lock and advise whether its certification can be confirmed.

Where Are BS3621 Locks Used?

BS3621 locks are primarily used on suitable timber entrance doors where key operation from both sides is appropriate. This can include front, back and side doors, as well as other suitable external timber doors.

On flat entrance doors, commercial premises and doors forming part of a means of escape, the required method of exit must also be considered before a BS3621 lock is selected.

Where a lock is fitted to a fire-resisting door or doorset, the complete locking arrangement and associated hardware must be suitable for that particular assembly and must not compromise its required operation or fire performance.

When Might a British Standard Lock Upgrade Be Advisable?

A lock upgrade may be advisable if:

The existing lock is old, worn or damaged
An external door is fitted with a two-lever or three-lever mortice lock
Keys have been lost or stolen
The property has changed ownership or occupancy, or there has been a change in authorised keyholders
An insurer specifies a lock meeting BS3621
Improved security is required following a break-in or attempted break-in
The existing lock's BS3621 certification cannot be confirmed

BS3621 and Keyless Exit

BS3621 may not be suitable for every door or building because it requires key operation from both sides. Where a door must be openable from the inside without a key, a lock meeting BS8621 may be more appropriate.

BS8621 lock assemblies are key-operated from the outside and allow keyless operation from the inside using a handle or thumbturn. This distinction is important where the door forms part of a required means of escape.

The correct locking arrangement should therefore be selected to suit the door, its use, the required means of escape and any applicable fire-safety or building requirements. In commercial, communal or managed premises, the proposed arrangement may also need to be considered as part of the premises' fire risk assessment.

BS3621 and uPVC or Composite Doors

uPVC and composite doors generally use multipoint locking systems and euro cylinders rather than traditional single-point mortice locks. BS3621 is therefore not normally the relevant standard for the complete multipoint locking system on these doors.

Depending on the door and locking system, standards for multipoint locking assemblies, such as PAS3621 or PAS8621, together with the appropriate cylinder security requirements, may be more relevant.
