What is BS3621?

BS 3621 is a British Standard for thief-resistant lock assemblies operated by key from both the inside and outside of a door.

Locks meeting BS 3621 are commonly fitted to external entrance doors on residential properties and provide a recognised level of security.

Some home insurance policies may specify BS 3621-compliant locks or other approved security measures. Property owners should check their individual policy requirements with their insurer.

How to Tell if Your Locks Are BS3621 Compliant

Method 1: Check for the British Standard Kitemark engraved on the lock.

Method 2: Check for the British Standard number (BS3621) stamped on the lock faceplate.

To check whether a front or back door lock conforms to BS 3621, open the door and inspect the lock faceplate along the edge of the door.

A conforming lock should display both the BSI Kitemark and the standard number BS 3621, usually followed by the relevant year, stamped or engraved on the faceplate. If the markings are unclear, ask a qualified locksmith to inspect the lock.
