What is BS3621?

BS3621 is a British Standard for thief-resistant, mechanically operated single-point lock assemblies operated by a key from both the inside and outside of a door.

Locks meeting BS3621 are commonly fitted to suitable external entrance doors on residential properties and provide a recognised level of security.

Some home insurance policies may specify BS3621-compliant locks or other approved security measures. Property owners should check their individual policy requirements with their insurer.

Where keyless escape is required, a different arrangement, potentially one certified to BS8621, may be more suitable.

How to Tell if Your Locks Are BS3621 Compliant

Check 1: Check for the BSI Kitemark engraved or stamped on the lock.

Check 2: Check for the British Standard number BS3621 stamped or engraved on the lock.

To check whether a front or back door lock meets BS3621, open the door and inspect the lock faceplate along the edge of the door.

A lock certified to BS3621 under the BSI Kitemark scheme should display the BSI Kitemark and the standard number BS3621, usually followed by the relevant year, stamped or engraved on the faceplate. If the markings are unclear, ask a qualified locksmith to inspect the lock.

Smart Locks
