Anti-Snap Lock Cylinders

Many uPVC, composite and aluminium doors use a euro cylinder as part of a multipoint locking system. Where a cylinder projects too far beyond the door furniture, is incorrectly sized or does not provide suitable protection, it may be more vulnerable to snapping or other forms of attack.

A correctly selected anti-snap or high-security cylinder can provide increased resistance to cylinder snapping and, depending on the product and its certification, other recognised methods of attack. The correct cylinder must be properly sized for the door and fitted with suitable handles and associated hardware. It should sit neatly within the door furniture without projecting unnecessarily.

We can assess the existing cylinder, check its size and operation and advise whether replacement or a security upgrade is appropriate. We can also check its operation with the handles and multipoint locking mechanism.

British Standard Door Locks

Timber entrance doors may be fitted with mortice locks, night latches or a combination of both. Older, worn or unsuitable locks can often be replaced with higher-security alternatives.

Where appropriate, existing locks can be replaced or upgraded with products certified to a relevant British Standard, including BS3621 where key operation from both sides is suitable.

Where a door must be openable from inside without a key, a lock certified to BS8621 or another suitable keyless-egress arrangement may be required. The required method of escape should therefore be considered when selecting a security upgrade, particularly on flat entrance doors and other doors forming part of a means of escape.

The correct lock will also depend on the door's construction and condition, the existing preparation and the required method of operation.

Where a lock is fitted to a fire-resisting door or doorset, the selected lock and associated hardware must be suitable for that particular assembly and must not compromise its required operation or fire performance.

Some insurers specify particular lock standards as a condition of cover. Customers should check the precise requirements of their home insurance policy before selecting an upgrade.

Additional Door Security

Some doors may benefit from supplementary mechanical security, including door bolts, reinforced keeps, door chains, restrictors, hinge bolts or improved strike plates.

Supplementary security should be selected and fitted to suit the particular door and frame. Strong hardware fitted to weak timber, unsuitable fixings or an already damaged door may provide limited additional protection.

Door chains and restrictors should normally be treated as supplementary devices rather than replacements for a suitable primary lock. Their strength will depend on the product, fixings and construction of the door and frame.

Any additional lock, bolt, chain or restrictor should remain practical for the occupants and must not compromise any required means of escape.

Patio and French Door Security

Patio doors and French doors may become difficult to secure if their locks, handles, bolts, keeps or multipoint locking mechanisms are worn or misaligned.

This may be useful where compatible locks are fitted to several entrances, such as front, back, garage or gate doors.

Replacement hardware must be suitable for the construction and condition of the door. Accurate measurements should be taken before fitting, and any additional security should be positioned carefully to avoid weakening the door or preventing normal operation.

Security should be considered across the complete opening rather than concentrating on the lock alone. Handles, hinges, keeps, fixings, the frame and surrounding material can all affect the overall strength and operation of a door or window.

If a property is rented, leasehold, listed or part of a communal building, consent or permission may be required from the landlord, freeholder, managing agent or relevant authority before alterations are made.
