Padlocks

B&B Locksmiths supplies and fits padlocks, hasps and staples, chains and other suitable security hardware throughout Oxford and Oxfordshire.

We help homeowners, landlords and businesses secure garages, sheds, gates, outbuildings, storage units, lockers, cabinets, toolboxes and restricted areas.

Padlocks offer a practical and versatile way to protect property and equipment. Depending on the application, a padlock may be used with a hasp and staple, security chain, ground anchor or another purpose-designed locking point or anchor.

Types of Padlocks

Common types of padlocks include:

  • Open-shackle padlocks

  • Closed-shackle or shrouded-shackle padlocks

  • Long-shackle padlocks

  • Combination padlocks

  • Weather-resistant padlocks

  • Key-operated padlocks

  • High-security padlocks

The most suitable option will depend on where the padlock is being used, its exposure to the weather, how frequently access is required, the necessary shackle diameter and clearance, the supporting hardware and the level of security required.

Outdoor Padlocks and Locking Hardware

Padlocks used outdoors should be designed for external use and suitable for the expected exposure to rain, dirt, moisture and changing temperatures.

Gates, sheds, garages and outbuildings may also require strong, weather-resistant hardware, such as a hasp and staple, security chain, ground or wall anchor, or another suitable locking point. The strength and installation of this supporting hardware are important because weaknesses elsewhere in the locking arrangement can reduce the protection provided by the padlock.

High-Security Padlocks

A closed-shackle, shrouded-shackle or other high-security padlock may be more appropriate for higher-risk locations.

Closed-shackle and shrouded-shackle designs reduce the amount of exposed shackle, which can make access with some cutting or forcing tools more difficult. However, the padlock still needs to be matched with suitable supporting hardware and a sufficiently strong door, gate or structure.

Where an independently tested security rating is required, we can advise on suitable products, including Sold Secure-rated padlocks and fittings where appropriate. If an insurer specifies a particular security standard or rating, customers should check the precise product category and grade required by their policy.

Choosing Suitable Padlock Hardware

The security of the complete locking arrangement depends on the padlock, its supporting hardware and the structure to which they are fitted.

The hasp, staple, chain, bolt or anchor point should be strong, correctly fitted and appropriate for the property and level of risk. Fitting a high-security padlock to weak, exposed or poorly installed hardware may provide little additional protection. Where appropriate, fixings should be positioned or protected so that they cannot easily be accessed while the padlock is secured. Through-bolts or reinforced fixings may provide greater resistance than exposed screws, depending on the construction of the gate, door or structure.

B&B Locksmiths can inspect an existing locking point and recommend a suitable combination of padlock and supporting hardware.

When Might a Padlock Need Replacing?

A padlock may need to be replaced if:

  • The keys have been lost or stolen

  • It has become stiff, corroded or damaged

  • The combination has been forgotten and cannot be recovered or reset

  • The existing padlock is unsuitable for outdoor use

  • A higher level of security is required

  • It is unsuitable for the existing hasp, chain or locking point

A stiff or difficult-to-operate padlock does not always need immediate replacement. We can assess its condition together with the supporting hardware before advising on the most practical option.

Padlock and Security Hardware Fitting

B&B Locksmiths can supply and fit padlocks, hasps and staples, security chains and suitable anchor points for domestic, rental and commercial properties. We can also assess an existing hasp, staple, chain or anchor point to determine whether it is suitable for the proposed padlock and the level of security required.
