Yale-style night latches are rim-mounted locks commonly fitted to timber front doors and other external doors. The lock case is surface-mounted on the inside face of the door and is usually operated by a key from outside and a knob or handle from inside. Some models incorporate a snib or other internal control, although its function varies according to the design of the lock.

A night latch engages automatically when the door is closed, making it convenient for everyday use. Deadlocking models incorporate additional features designed to resist the latch being slipped or forced back. The way these features operate varies between models, and simply closing the door does not necessarily activate every available security function.

Types of Night Latches

The most suitable option will depend on the type and condition of the door, the required method of operation, the level of security needed and any relevant requirements set by your insurer.

British Standard Night Latches

Some higher-security night-latch assemblies are independently tested and certified to BS3621 or other relevant standards. A standard or deadlocking night latch does not automatically meet BS3621, so certification should be checked for the particular lock assembly rather than relying on descriptions such as “high security” or “deadlocking” alone.

BS3621 lock assemblies are operated by a key from both sides of the door. Where the door must be openable from inside without a key, a lock assembly certified to BS8621, or another suitable keyless egress arrangement, may be more appropriate. BS8621 assemblies are key-operated externally and allow operation from inside using a handle or thumbturn.

This distinction can be particularly relevant on flat entrance doors and other doors where means of escape requirements must be considered. The appropriate locking arrangement should take account of the door, the required security level, the means of escape and any requirements specified by the insurer, landlord or managing agent.

Where a night latch is fitted to a fire-resisting door or doorset, the lock and associated hardware must be suitable for that particular assembly. The installation must not adversely affect the door's required fire performance, self-closing action or ability to close fully and latch securely.

When Might a Night Latch Need Repair or Replacement?

A night latch may need to be repaired or replaced if:

The keys have been lost or stolen
The lock has become worn, stiff or faulty
The latch no longer engages correctly
The door has become difficult to secure
The property has changed ownership or occupancy
A higher level of security is required
The existing lock is unsuitable for the required means of escape
An insurer specifies a lock meeting a recognised British Standard
The rim cylinder has become loose, damaged or difficult to operate
There has been a break-in or attempted break-in

Correct Night Latch Fitting and Alignment

Correct fitting and alignment are important. The lock, latch and keep must align properly so that the door closes smoothly, latches reliably and can be locked and unlocked without placing unnecessary strain on the key or mechanism.

The night latch must be suitable for the door’s thickness, construction, opening direction and available fitting space. The backset and dimensions of the lock case must also be appropriate for the door. Narrow door stiles, glazed panels or decorative features may limit which models can be fitted correctly.

Night Latch Fitting, Replacement and Repairs

Where the night latch case remains serviceable, the external rim cylinder may sometimes be replaced separately with a compatible component, avoiding unnecessary replacement of the complete lock assembly.
